Highway Box 19-1, 17-1 (Northbound), 6-1 (Southbound), GCEMS BLS 18, 11, LS-4 were dispatched to mile marker 21 on 295 south bound for a commercial motor vehicle crash with entrapment. County communications advised of a 3 vehicle crash involving a dump truck, an 18 wheeler, and a 4 door sedan. The dump truck being overturned. Squad 613 arrived first due confirming the report immediately assessing the scene, stabilizing the overturned vehicle, and beginning the extrication of the 2 occupants in the vehicle. 614 arrived and assisted with stabilization. Rescue 1918 utilized its portable winch along with Paratech rescue struts off of Squad 613 to stabilize the overturned truck. Rescue company 738 was special requested by Chief 6200 (Ferriola) and assisted with extrication. Ladder 1916’s crew stretched a 1 3/4″ line off the front bumper of 613 in case fire suppression was needed. During the course of the rescue multiple additional medical resources were dispatched including 2 helicopters. Once crews were able to free the first occupant the victim was flown to a near by hospital. The second occupant that was trapped was unfortunately pronounced deceased on scene.
Crews remained on scene for several hours while the New Jersey State Police completed their investigation. It is unknown at the time of writing this article on the status of the victim flown. One other victim was also transported by ground to a nearby hospital.
